Ed Piper practices at the intersection of technology, employment, and business law. As a technology and business litigator, Ed has both prosecuted and defended a wide range of data security cases, including those involving claims arising under the Stored Communications Act, the Wiretap Act, the Computer Fraud and Abuse Act, the Defend Trade Secrets Act, the Uniform Trade Secrets Act, and other statutory and common law data security regimes. He also routinely assists clients in developing strategies to protect sensitive business data, in becoming ready to deal with data breaches if and when they occur, and in complying with myriad domestic and international consumer privacy regulations, including the California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA), the EU’s General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), and other similar requirements.

As an employment lawyer, Ed primarily (but not exclusively) represents employers. He has both advised on and litigated matters involving the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), the Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA), Title VII of the Civil Rights Act, the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA), and a broad range of other federal and state employment laws. Additionally, Ed routinely represents both employers and employees in disputes over the enforceability of noncompetition agreements and other types of restrictive covenants. He also has experience in litigating antitrust, corporate governance, and other types of complex commercial disputes.

Before joining the firm, Ed practiced with Paul Hastings LLP in Palo Alto, California and Stoel Rives LLP in Portland, Oregon. He also served as general counsel to a large, privately held technology company that provides business and communications services to customers around the world.
